LETS GO…
BTM:
”GLOW’ feels deeply personal — like a reflection of something internal. What moment or shift in your life sparked the creation of this track?
Mattie B:
“ “Glow” is absolutely personal. The message within the song is my foundational philosophy in life which is “the power resides in YOU”. You are the Master of your Belief. The song was created by just getting in flow with the production created by Dorrell “Twin” Smith. His beat felt like the perfect home for a song reflecting relatable messages, encouragement, and a positive bounce.”
BTM:
The title ‘GLOW’ says so much with just one word. What does that word mean to you right now — as an artist and as a woman?
Mattie B:
“To me GLOW represents standing in your power, walking in your purpose, and being reminded that you are the captain of your own ship in this life.”
BTM:
You carry this strong but graceful energy both online and in your music. How do you stay grounded while growing your career and platform?
Mattie B:
“I appreciate the compliment and that this is the reflection you gather! I’m truly a low-key person (not shy) and I appreciate the simple things so I believe that’s a big part of me staying grounded. My family and friends play a major role in this as well where I know their opinion of me is more important than the “world’s”. I often say I’m not a good liar which allows me so much more room to just be myself and let things fall into place how they fall.”
BTM:
A lot of fans are connecting with the vibe and the message of ‘GLOW.’ Was there a specific message or feeling you hoped listeners would walk away with?
Mattie B:
“Absolutely! I was hopeful that listeners of “Glow” would gather confidence, a great positive vibe, inspiration to dance, and a reminder that the power of change in behavior and perspective resides inside of them!”
BTM:
We hear empowerment in the lyrics, but also vulnerability. How do you balance those two energies when you’re writing or recording?
Mattie B:
“The balance of vulnerability and empowerment in this instance of the record “Glow” was natural because those are two main ingredients of the message of the song. I wanted to be sure to acknowledge the trials and tribulations of life that we are all experiencing, then quickly get back to the reality that we can overcome them if we believe that we can.”
BTM:
If ‘GLOW’ had a visual mood board, what images, colors, or scenes would be on it? Paint us a picture of what this song looks like to you.
Mattie B:
“A “Glow” mood board. Yellow representing the sun. Purple as a representation of royalty. Smiles. A lot of smiles! People walking tall and sitting up in confidence on their thrones. And a variety of dancing!”
BTM:
Can you share a behind-the-scenes moment from recording ‘GLOW’ that made you realize this song was something special?
Mattie B:
“A moment I do remember experiencing when writing and recording the song was having a feeling of joy and clarity come over me. When I’m writing records for myself as the artists I always consider how people will connect to the message and with “Glow” I could foresee the connection and the positive and empowering feelings it could give.”
BTM:
What’s something your day-one fans would be proud to hear you say right now?
Mattie B:
“I believe my day-ones would be proud to hear me say that I am still motivated on this journey even after 15 plus years of being intentional in my pursuit of songwriting and music.”
BTM:
How has your unique perspective as a woman influenced your lyrical themes and storytelling in your music?
Mattie B:
“My perspective as a woman and female songwriter allows me to approach some stories with a feminine and gentle touch, in addition to sensuality in some cases. Being a woman also makes me consider how I make other women feel through my music, how I reflect to young girls, and if I am being a positive and honest influence on men and women.”
BTM:
Can you share an experience or challenge you’ve faced in the industry that has shaped your journey and inspired your work?
Mattie B:
“A challenge that has shaped my journey and has ultimately inspired my work is experiencing moments where it seems like people don’t see me or understand me. Whenever I get this feeling I quickly self reflect and ask “Am I being easy to connect with?”, “Am I being clear in my message and intention?”, and “Am I going hard enough?”. This quickly removes the ability to blame and it challenges me to get back to work on my art and myself.”
BTM:
We like to ask every artist this bonus question,
If years from now, a new artist cites you as their biggest influence, what would you hope they learned from your journey?
Mattie B:
“If an artist cites me as their biggest influence years from now, I would hope from my journey that they learned to believe more in their own ability to evolve and get better. I’d also hope they understand the importance of patience and belief that things will fall in the right place when you are overall doing your best and being your best.”
